編集カリフォルニア州ポモナ生まれ。父親のドナルド・マッケナ(Donald McKenna)も古生物学者。アメリカ自然史博物館の古脊椎動物部門のキュレーターであり、1997年にスーザン・K・ベル(Susan K. Bell)と共著で書籍 "Classification of Mammals"(哺乳類の分類)を刊行した人物である。2000年に古脊椎動物学会(Society of Vertebrate Paleontology)の最高の賞であるローマー=シンプソン賞(Romer-Simpson Medal)を受賞した[1]。1992年にはアメリカ古生物学会から”The Paleontological Society Medal”を受賞した[2]。2008年3月3日、コロラド州ボルダーにて死去した[1]。
