IMP C LAELIANVS P F AVG, laureate and cuirassed bust right
TEMPORVM FELICITAS, female figure (Hispania) reclining left, holding branch in right hand and resting left arm on hare.
RIC V pt. 2, 1; Schulte 2 (Av1/Rv2); Gilljam pg. 38, 5-7 (same dies); Elmer 623; Cohen 2. Extremely rare, only twelve other aurei of Laelianus known, most of which are in museum collections.
The reclining figure on the reverse of this aureus precisely resembles the figure of Hispania on aurei of Hadrian minted more than a century earlier. The family name Ulpius links Laelianus to the aristocratic Spanish family which had produced the great emperor Trajan more than a century and a half before. These and other allusions on the coinage may indicate that the usurper was of Spanish descent, or that his revolt either originated in Spain or had the support of influential Spaniards residing in Gaul.
